Artist’s Statement
Jamie Melville ARPS
I make photographs of people and the places they belong to, working in the space between fine art and documentary.
I hold an MA in Photography from Falmouth University and an Associate Distinction from the Royal Photographic Society. My practice is concerned with memory, identity and place attachment: what people carry from where they come from, and how they make a home somewhere new. It has led me from post-Katrina New Orleans to a hundred-year-old family archive and, closer to home, an ongoing collaboration with Ukrainian refugees rebuilding their lives in London.
My commissioned portraits grow from the same concerns. People who come to London to mark a moment, a proposal, a family trip, a first visit together, are forming their own attachment to a place. I photograph them with the patience for the unposed moment that my documentary work demands, so what they take home is less a souvenir than a record of belonging somewhere, for a while.

An ongoing collaborative documentary with Ukrainian photographer Maryna Khivrych, following Ukrainian refugees as they rebuild their lives and relationships in London.
The Burns Archive: a hundred-year collaboration
After my Grandma, Norma, passed away, I discovered a collection of photographic negatives on 120 film, cut and stuffed into a box and an old Ilford photographic paper envelope. These negatives from the family archive, some over 100 years old, had never been seen before by living descendants.
This collaboration with the archive explores place-attachment, memory and identity.
